My little dog Tammy, a small black and white Heinz 57, had been a great companion. She had always been a healthy dog and had only taken visits to the Animal Hospital for minor problems and routine check-ups. However, at the age of 14 or 15 she developed Congenital Heart disease. The Doctor put her on medication to take care of her condition but warned me that in time she would get worse. Like most animals Tammy was not a fan of visiting her doctors. Inevitably she did worsen and by the time she reached the grand old age of 16, I had to make a decision about her future. I was hoping that she would pass away in her sleep, but her willpower was very strong. It was her body that was failing her. I finally made the decision to call Home to Heaven. I knew that Euthanasia was the best option and Tammy would no longer be in any distress. I called Dr. Kathleen Cooney on a Friday night and she said she would come over first thing in the morning. Saturday arrived and she came over to my home. Kathleen is a very professional and empathetic person. She explained the procedure, reassuring me that I was definitely doing the right thing. Tammy seemed at ease as she was in her familiar surroundings. I know this would not have been the case if I had taken her to the hospital. Kathleen was patient with me, totally understanding how difficult this situation was, and waited for me to give the signal to proceed. Tammy passed away with me by her side stroking her little head. It was a peaceful experience and I am so happy that she died at home with me and in comfort. I want to thank Kathleen for coming over to my home and for her professional and kind manner. I would strongly recommend her to anyone and feel this is the kindest way to treat your beloved pets. –Jane Ashby
